ABOUT NAMI RAPPAHANNOCK
Supporting Mental Health in the Rappahannock Region Since 1984
Founded in 1984, NAMI Rappahannock began when a small group of family members and friends came together to support one another while navigating the challenges of mental illness.
Originally known as RAMI (Rappahannock Alliance for the Mentally Ill), the organization was formed after two individuals recognized a critical need for a mental health support system in the Rappahannock Region. At a time when resources were limited and stigma was common, their vision helped create a safe space rooted in understanding, shared experience, and hope.
A simple notice published in the Free-Lance Star announced a support group meeting to be held in a basement room at the former site of Mary Washington Hospital on Fall Hill Avenue in Fredericksburg.
That first meeting marked the beginning of a grassroots movement. What started as a small gathering quickly became a trusted source of connection and support for individuals and families seeking guidance during difficult moments.
